Your favourite West Ham United manager?
With Bilic starting so well it made me think about who is actually my favourite all time manager. Remember I am only 26 so not much to choice from but...
Apart from that little spell under Brooking it has to be Alan Pardew - took us to a cup final and getting up promoted was brilliant. I have a feeling Bilic could overtake him though.

Re: Your favourite West Ham United manager?
The great John Lyall for me. Greenwood was around when I was a bit too young and first real memories are from1975 onwards really so literally grew up with John Lyall at Wet Ham. Really thought he would be there forever and can't remember ever wanting him out despite relegation in 89

The teams of 81 and 86 epitomised everything that West Ham is all about for me and it's a shame it went a bit sour but the board really buggered up,. The obvious thing was for John to have groomed Billy Bonds for the jib whilst being in Division Two and then moved upstairs like Ron did with John. Not sure John would have done it but it would have been nice if he had been asked. I have a hunch that the board saw him as too powerful.

Any of the younger fellas here would enjoy both Greenwood and Lyall's autobiographies. Both fascinating reads and you can get them on fairly cheap through online stores.

Had soft spots for both Bonzo for obvious reasons and Harry because of his football for a time, and ok Lou Macari was a disaster in many ways but to be fair he bought some bloody good players to the Club.

Alex Bunbury wrote...

"Growing up in the mid eighties John Lyall was all I ever knew and in many ways he epitomises what West Ham is/was. Quite a few wanted him out at the end though. "

John Lyall wanted himself out in 1982, but the board blocked it.

Harry for me; I don't understand the acrimony towards him of some WHOers.

John Lyall was my personal favourite and the 1980/1 team was superb, better than the 86 team I reckon. Agree with Eerie that redknapp team was fucking scintillating to watch.

Lou Macari.

Inherited a turd of a team destined for another relegation.

Great transfer deals turned the team around.

Redknapp was fucking superb for us. Hate him all you want, but that's the truth.

The team with Di Canio heading it was absolutely sublime at times.

I wanted to say Harry Redknapp, so many happy memories from his tenure.

Hartson, Bilic, Dani, Dicks, Rio, Lamaprd, Carrick, Cole, Sinclair, both Pearces, Di Canio we're signed on his watch & he turned us around to where relegation was unacceptable when it used to be the norm.

Say what you like about Avram Grant, but always thought the clubshop missed a trick, in not bringing out a cd of the best of Avram's post match interviews.
